February 20th, 2013

Alright, I’m back from Mexico and ready to get going with my NHL picks again.  Overall it was an awesome trip – a lot of fun and nice to get away from the computer and work for a week and recharge (I’ll post a picture at the bottom of this post). We finished off before my vacation with a 2-0 night nailing both the OVER in the Canes/Isles game and the UNDER in the Coyotes/Avs game.

I was pleased to have a great internet connection in my room at the resort so I was able to check NHL scores, and get all the updates I needed to stay in tuned with things each night.

Tonight there are three NHL games on the board and I’ve got two plays going…

2 UNIT = Philadelphia Flyers @ Pittsburgh Penguins – OVER 5.5 GOALS (-122)
(Note: I’m risking 2.00 units to win 1.70 units)

The Flyers are coming off a 7-0 win in New York against the Islanders and they’ve scored 14 goals over their last 4 games (over 3 goals per game during that span). The Penguins have won three straight games scoring 11 goals during that span (just under 4 goals per game).  They’ve won 8 of their last 10 games and in those wins they’ve scored 34 goals (4.25 goals per game).  These two teams met once this year and it was a 3-1 Pittsburgh win in Philadelphia, but they played very high scoring games last season.  The OVER is 5-1-1 in their last 7 meetings in Pittsburgh (which included some totals of 6, 6.5 and even 7 in last years playoff series).  The OVER is 20-8-1 in the Penguins last 29 home games and 35-15-2 in their last 52 overall.  Take the OVER here tonight.

2 UNIT = St Louis Blues @ Colorado Avalanche – AVALANCHE TO WIN (+106)
(Note: I’m risking 2.00 units to win 2.12 units)

The St Louis Blues were stuck in Vancouver after a 4-3 shootout victory due to airplane troubles and went home to lose 2-1 against San Jose last night.  They now have to head right to Colorado to play another game, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out slow tonight.  The Blues are 3-1 in their last 4 games, but just 3-6 in their last 9 games.  In those 6 losses they scored just 1 goal four times.  The Avs are coming off a big 6-5 win against Nashville on Monday, and are 2-1 over their last three games.  In those games they’ve scored 14 goals.  The Avalanche are below .500, but are a solid 4-2-1 at home this year.  This will be these two teams first meeting of the 2013 season, but the Avs are 9-3 in their last 12 meetings overall and 22-6-4 in their last 32 meetings in Colorado.  Given that the Blues played three straight road games, got stuck in Vancouver, are playing in a back to back on the road, and haven’t had much success against the Avs, I like Colorado as home underdogs tonight.

Lets have a great first night back!  Here is a picture of me and the girlfriend in Mexico after finishing up at the spa yesterday before our flight home…

  1. Duncan MacTavish on

Only twist on this is I got word last night that Jaroslav Halak is returning tonight between the pipes for his first start since 2-January.

At the other end, Avalanche keep Semyon Varlamov in action (confirmed 4PM today)who has been saving 90% + but still manages to let in 3 to 5 goals a game, the Colorado defense are paper-thin right now.

I took St Louis at 5/1 (+134) in 60 minutes. GL tonight.

I have to laugh when an NHL game goes 0-0 to RT.

Either way, Jaroslav Halak comes back after and lands a shut-out after 6 weeks is pretty incredible.
