A rare day in the NHL as we have 3 afternoon games on a Monday because of the US holiday (Martin Luther King Jr Day). There are 6 games in the NHL to choose from today, but as I am getting this post out just before 1:00 PM EST I won’t even take a look at the early games for this post.
If you haven’t signed up to receive my “Game of the Week” picks I encourage you to click here to sign up free… I have my eye on a game tomorrow that, depending on where the line opens up at, might be my GOW pick!
Let’s get going with today’s picks…
NHL Betting Picks for Monday, January 17th:
San Jose Sharks @ Phoenix Coyotes – COYOTES TO WIN (-107) – Coming into the game as only slight favorites, I like the Coyotes here at home. San Jose is coming off a win, but had lost 6 straight before that. The Phoenix Coyotes have been playing well lately winning 4 straight and 6 of their last 7 games. The Coyotes are coming off of a convincing 6-2 win against the Ducks on Saturday night. These two teams have pretty similar numbers on the season, but a look at their last 5 games shows that Phoenix has been playing a lot better hockey. Phoenix has averaged 4 goals per game in their last 5 and are only giving up an average of 2.20 goals over that span. On the other hand the Sharks have only scored an average of 1.80 goals per game in their past 5 and have given up an average of 2.80 goals in those games. The Coyotes are 4-1 in their last 5 home games, and are in a revenge spot against the Sharks who took these two teams first meeting of the season 4-1 in San Jose. Coyotes are a solid bet tonight at home.
Los Angeles Kings @ Dallas Stars – STARS TO WIN (-126) – The Los Angeles Kings have been a disaster lately, winning only 2 of their last 9 games, which included 8 home games. Dallas on the other hand has been playing some very solid hockey as of late, winning three straight and 5 of their last 6 games. Their latest victory was a 6-1 stomping of the Thrashers on Saturday. The Kings will have Bernier in net tonight, as Quick misses another start with a knee injury. Bernie is just 1-5 on the road this year, with a .897 SV %. Kari Lethonen will get the start for the Stars and is 11-6-4 at home this season. The Stars are averaging 3.80 goals per game in their last 5 and just 1.40 goals against on average in those same 5 games. LA is giving up 3.40 goals against per game in their past 5. The Kings have dominated this match up lately, but with the direction these two teams have gone in the past 10 games I think we have value on the Stars playing at home.
