We are back! The “second half” of the NHL season has begun, and I am ready to get back into things and finish off the season right. My goal is to get out of the red by playoffs, and have another great run in the postseason (which will include season series picks for clients – similar to last year). If you’ve been following me all season you know that I had a very rough start to the season, but have slowly gotten things back together. I usually do my best with all sports near the middle and end of the season and I expect to start off with a great week this week and continue on from there.
Lets have a great second half to the season and win some money!
Two plays tonight, as I ease into things.
Detroit Red Wings @ Calgary Flames – UNDER 5.5 GOALS (-145)
(Note: I’m risking 1.45 units to win 1 unit)
**I bought this total up to 5.5. The sportsbooks have it listed at 5, but I find more value in buying the total up to 5.5 and laying some chalk**
The Red Wings finished off the first half of the season prior to the All Star break with an embarrassing 7-2 loss in Montreal, but were great before that. The Red Wings have 33 wins and a 33-16-1 record, which has all started in between the pipes with Jimmy Howard. Howard is 30-11-1 with a 2,03 GAA and .924 SV% this season. The Flames went into the break going 5-2-1 in their last 8 games, and are 23-21-6 on the season. The Flames are a better 13-7-2 at home, where they’ve held opponents to just 2.27 goals per game. The red Wings are averaging 2.48 goals per game on the road, which brings their overall goals per game down to 3.1. The Flames are averaging just 2.4 goals per game overall and 2.45 goals per game at home. Both teams enter the break playing low scoring games, with the Red Wings averaging just 2.20 goals per game over their last 5 and 2.80 goals against/game over that span. The Red Wings have only scored more than 3 goals in a game once in their last 11 games played. Calgary is averaging 1.80 goals per and against per game over their last 5, and have scored 2 or less in 7 of their last 10. These two teams have met three times this season back in November and December, with the UNDER 5.5 going 2-1. The UNDER is 7-1 in the Wings last 8 overall, and 4-1-1 in the Flames last 6. The UNDER is also 7-1-1 in the Flames last 9 home games. The UNDER is also 4-1 in their last 5 meetings in Calgary. The books have this listed at 5, but I’ve bought it up to 5.5 as two of their three meetings have landed right on 5 this season.
Columbus Blue Jackets @ San Jose Sharks – UNDER 5.5 GOALS (-128)
(Note: I’m risking 1.28 units to win 1 unit)
Columbus is just 13-30-6 at this point in this season, and just 5-17-3 on the road. The fact that they are averaging just 2.28 goals per game on the road won’t help them much. The Blue Jackets have lost 4 straight games heading into tonight, and are still missing some of their key offensive players. The Sharks are 27-14-6 on the year and 15-8-2 at home. They are averaging 2.88 goals per game at home and 2.52 goals against per game. Both teams entered the break struggling to score as the Blue Jackets were averaging 1.80 goals per game over their last 5 and the Sharks were at a brutal 1.40/game in their last 5. Take note that the UNDER is 33-15-3 in the Blue Jackets last 51 games as an underdog of +201 or more. The UNDER is also 4-0 in their last 4 vs a team with a winning record. The UNDER is 6-1 in the Sharks last 7 home games, and 4-1 in their last 5 overall. The UNDER is 21-7 in San Jose’s last 28 overall vs Western Conference opponents. Also take note that the UNDER is 20-5-1 in these two teams last 26 meetings overall and 4-0 in their last 4 meetings in San Jose. Both meetings this season came in January, and both finished with a total of 3 goals. I don’t see Columbus scoring more than 2 goals tonight, and in order for the over in that case the Sharks would have to score 4. The Sharks haven’t scored 4 goals in a game in their last 8 as they have been going through some offensive struggles. I’ll take the UNDER tonight at a good price.
Last chance to sign up for my NFL picks for the Super Bowl this weekend. You can email me if you’re interested in my Super Bowl play and write up — It’s going to be a great game and we are going to CASH!
