A solid WINNING day as we hit 2 of our 3 underdog picks, which includes the big play with the Avalanche winning 4-0 in Chicago as +178 underdogs. It looked like we may have a perfect 3 for 3 day with underdogs with the Islanders leading 2-1 at one point, but the Ducks scored 3 third period goals to spoil that.
Not a bad day picking up 2 units, and we will continue that success right into Saturday with a big NHL board going…
I’m getting out two early picks first as the Senators are in Philadelphia for a 1:00 PM EST game and The Blue Jackets are in Los Angeles for a 4:00 PM EST start….
**1:00 PM EST START** Ottawa Senators @ Philadelphia Flyers – SENATORS TO WIN (+160)
**4:00 PM EST START** Columbus Blue Jackets @ Los Angeles Kings – UNDER 5 GOALS (+114)
Columbus has won just once in their last 9 games and are 10-24-5 on the season (4-13-2 on the road). They are averaging just 2.3 goals per game on the season, and just 1.80 goals/game over their last 5. Los Angeles has won 6 of 9 games, getting points in all 3 of their losses during that span. The Kings are averaging just 2.1 goals per game this season and 1.60 goals per game over their last 5. During that 5 game span the Kings are averaging just 0.60 goals against per game, which includes 2 shutouts. Curtis Sanford will get the start this afternoon, and is 5-7-3 on the year with a 2.62 GAA and .911 SV%. Although not confirmed by the team, we can expect Jonathan Quick in net for the Kings. He is 4-1 in his last 5 games, allowing just 5 goals over those 5 games (which includes the 2 shutouts). He is 18-10-6 on the season with a 1.90 GAA and .933 SV%. The UNDER is 4-1 in the Blue Jackets last 5 overall, and 5-2 in their last 7 road games vs a team with a winning home record. The UNDER is 13-4-4 in the Kings last 21 home games and 34-14-11 in their last 59 overall dating back to last season. The UNDER is also 9-1-1 in the Kings last 11 vs a team with a winning % below .400. These two teams have met once this season on December 15th, with the Kings winning 2-1 in Columbus. I expect the Kings to limit the Blue Jackets chances this afternoon, and we should see a low scoring game. Take the UNDER.
Colorado Avalanche @ St Louis Blues – UNDER 5.5 GOALS (-130)
The Avalanche have won 9 of their last 10 games, including last night’s win in Chicago as pretty big underdogs. The Avs did something that is pretty hard to do – shutout the Blackhawks in their own building. Colorado is playing good defensive hockey, allowing just 1.80 goals against over their last 5 and 1.70 goals over their last 10 games. The Avs have improved to 23-18-1 on the season during this winning streak, and will wrap up a 4 game road trip tonight in St Louis. The Blues come into tonight winners of two straight home games, including a come from behind win against the Oilers on Thursday night, but had lost three straight prior to the two wins. St Louis has one of the NHL’s best home records at 16-3-2, and that can be credited to their defensive play at home. The Blues are averaging just 1.86 goals against per game at home, while scoring just over 3 per game. Over their last 5 games the Blues are averaging 2.20 goals per game and giving up 2.20 goals against per game. Take note that the UNDER is 16-5-8 in the Blues last 29 games overall, and 11-2-3 in their last 16 vs a team with a winning record. The UNDER is 4-1 in the Avs last 5 games playing on 0 days rest, and 4-1 in their last 5 overall. The UNDER is also 9-4 in these two teams last 13 meetings in St Louis. Take note that both of tonight’s goalies (Giguere and Elliot) have a GAA under 2.00 and very impressive SV %’sBoth teams are playing good defensive hockey lately, and with their first two meetings finishing with 5 goals a piece I’ll take the UNDER 5.5 here.
Washington Capitals @ San Jose Sharks – SHARKS TO WIN (-138)
Both of these teams have enjoyed some recent success. The Caps have won 4 straight heading into tonight, but 3 of those 4 were on home ice. The Sharks have won 3 straight and 7 of their last 9 games overall. Washington is 21-15-2 on the season, but just 7-10-1 on the road. The Sharks are 22-11-4 and 13-7-2 on home ice. San Jose has won 6 of their last 8 home games, while the Capitals are just 3-8 in their last 11 road games. Also take note that the Capitals are 0-5 in their last 5 as an underdog. San Jose is 5-1 in their last 6 following a win, and 29-12 in their last 41 home games as a favorite of -110 to -150. The Sharks are averaging just under 3 goals per game at home this season, while the Capitals are giving up a high 3.22 goals against per game on the road. Although this is a East vs West match up, the Capitals are just 2-16-1 in their last 19 meetings, and 0-8 in their last 8 meetings in San Jose. The Sharks have been solid at home lately, while the Caps just don’t seem to show up to play on the road. I like the Sharks to win tonight with a big performance at home.
