A tough night on the ice last night, as both favorites ended up losing by 2 goals at home. There were some weird games on the schedule last night, including the Sabres shutting out San Jose 1-0 in a late game and the Jets blowing away the Panthers 7-0. A friend of mine had a play on Montreal to win in regulation time, but Minnesota scored 3 times in the final 4 minutes including two with the goalie pulled and the final goal with 10 seconds left – talk about a tough one to take.
Today only play pops out at me, and we are going with a hot home favorite.
Chicago Blackhawks @ Ottawa Senators – SENATORS TO WIN (-130)
(Note: I’m risking 1.30 units to win 1 unit)
The Blackhawks had lost three straight before beating the slumping Toronto Maple Leafs at home on Wednesday. The Blackhawks were down early, but ended up coming back to win 5-4. Although Chicago is a solid 22-7-4 at home they are just 12-17-3 on the road this year. In fact Chicago has won just 3 of their last 16 road games. Overall Chicago has won just 5 of their last 12 games. The Senators come into tonight’s home game winners of 6 of their last 7 games, which includes a Tuesday win in Boston where Robin Lehner recorded his first shutout. Lehner is 3-0 on the season with a 1.33 GAA and .954 SV% – he will get the start tonight. Ottawa is 17-12-3 at home on the season and 34-23-8 overall. The Sens are 11-5 in their last 16 games as a favorite. The Blackhawks turn to Ray Emery tonight as Corey Crawford was pulled again on Wednesday night. Emery is 12-8-2 with a 2.72 GAA and .905 SV% this season. Even with their 5 goal performance against the Maple Leafs the Blackhawks are scoring just 1.80 goals per game over their last 5. The Senators are scoring 4 goals per game over their last 5. Ottawa is on the rise, while the Blackhawks have been on a downslide lately. I’ll ride the hot team playing at home, as I expect them to come out hard tonight to again prove they can beat some of the league’s best teams. Senators win.
