Another Winner last night with the Flyers getting things done in an exciting game. They killed two late penalties to hold on to a one goal win. Coming right back tonight with a big NHL betting board, and a couple plays going…
Los Angeles Kings @ New Jersey Devils – KINGS TO WIN (-110)
(Note: I’m risking 1.10 units to win 1 unit)
Jonathan Quick vs Martin Brodeur in net tonight. Both goalies have had just 1 start this season, with Quick stopped 24 of 26 shots in a victory and Brodeur allowing 3 goals on 29 shots in a 3-0 loss. Quick had better numbers than the aging Brodeur last season with a .918 SV% and 2.24 GAA compared to Brodeur’s .903 SV% and 2.45 GAA. The Kings have looked solid in their first two games (which were played in Europe) beating the Rangers 3-2 in overtime, and then losing to a solid Buffalo team 4-2 despite outshooting them 33-26. The Devils have split their first two games to start the season (both at home) losing 3-0 to the Flyers and then beating the now 1-2-1 Hurricanes 4-2 on Monday. I’ve said it in a previous write up – I don’t see the Devils getting off to a fast start this season, especially with Travis Zajac injured. The Kings should be near the top of the Western Conference again this season, and they’ve looked good early. With 4 days off since their game in Europe I expect them to be prepared for tonight’s game. Take the Kings as small road favorites.
St Louis Blues @ Dallas Stars – BLUES TO WIN (+103)
(Note: I’m risking 1 unit to win 1.03 units)
You have to question how much home ice advantage the Stars will get when they have crowd sizes like they did on Monday (6,306). The Stars have opened this season 2-1, but have goalie Kari Lehtonen to thank for that. Lehtonen has stopped 77 of 70 shots for a .975 SV% in his two starts (both wins), and without him the Stars could easily be 0-3 coming into tonight. The Blues have gone 1-1 in their first two games which were both at home. To open the season the Blues dropped a 4-2 (empty net goal) decision to Nashville despite outshooting them 33-16. St Louis followed that up with another one sided game, but this time had a better outcome, in a 5-2 win against Calgary, outshooting them 35-17. Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak hasn’t looked good to start the season, but I look for him to improve quickly here early in the season. The Blues are bringing a lot more energy right now, and if they play like they have been they should do well tonight against the Stars. Also note that this is a revenge game for the Blues, who dropped all four decisions to Dallas last season.
Vancouver Canucks @ Detroit Red Wings – OVER 5.5 GOALS (-104)
(Note: I’m risking 1.04 units to win 1 unit)
Both of these two elite Western Conference teams have been putting up some big numbers in their first few games of the season. The Canucks have scored 10 goals in 3 games, while the Red Wings have scored 8 goals in their 2 games. Take note that the 8 goals that the Red Wings have scored have come even strength. Once they get their power-play going… look out. Take note that these two teams are both sitting below 70% on the penalty kill. We are expected to see Cory Schneider and Jimmy Howard in goal tonight. Note that the OVER is 8-3-2 in the Canucks last 13 road games, and 6-1-1 in their last 8 as an underdog. The OVER is 8-1 in the Wings last 9 home games, 12-5 in their last 17 vs Western Conference opponents, and 13-6 in their last 10 overall. Also note that the OVER is 6-3 in these two teams last 9 meetings. Both teams are averaging over 33 shots on goal, and we know both are capable of getting goals. Look for a shootout type game tonight, similar to what we saw in the Canucks game last night in Philadelphia. Take the OVER at a great price.
