My apologies as personal reasons kept me from posting my picks for last night’s NHL action, however my winning ways did continue with my most recent pick on Wednesday night. The Stars and Flames got together in a battle of two teams that were desperate for points to help them get in to the postseason, but there is likely not a team in the Western Conference that is currently as desperate as the Dallas Stars. The Stars need just about every point that is available in their remaining regular season games, and they helped out their own cause on Wednesday night by knocking off the Flames by a 4-3 score. Not only was this a big win for Dallas, it is another big win for my NHL picks that could no possibly be hotter at the moment. Over the last two weeks of picks, I have had just one loss and one push. Hands down my best run of this season and I am excited to keep things rolling tonight as there are only three games on the NHL schedule this evening.
Dallas Stars @ Edmonton Oilers
My Pick – OVER 5.5 (-130)
Speaking of the Dallas Stars, they will be back in action tonight to continue their Western Canada swing as this time they will be in Oil Country to take on the Edmonton Oilers. As I mentioned above, Dallas is hanging on by a thread in the Western Conference playoff race and tonight gives them an opportunity to grab another crucial two points against an inferior opponent in the Oilers. The reasoning for my pick is quite obvious if you have read any past pieces involving the Stars, but it is worthy of repeating. The Stars are the Western Conference’s highest scoring team as their 3.08 goals per game sits behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning, but their defence is also among the league’s worst as they surrender 3.15 goals per game, good for 26th in the league. One of those teams sitting behind the Stars in the latter category is none other than the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers sit dead-last in the NHL in terms of goals against per game with 3.34 and their 77.1% penalty killing clip sits 28th in the league. The good news for this pick is that the Oilers have been scoring goals with the best of them for some time now. They rallied from a 3-0 deficit on Wednesday night to knock off the visiting Colorado Avalanche by a 4-3 count and they have the league’s number one ranked powerplay unit since the All-Star break. These two teams should be playing a wide-open style game tonight which is a rare occurrence in the Western Conference given it’s traditional tight-checking format, unless of course one of these two teams are involved. Together they average 6.49 goals against per game and the proof is in the pudding as we don’t have to look too far back in the season series to see what can very well take place tonight. In their most recent meeting which also took place in Edmonton, these two teams sat tied at 5-5 in regulation before Shawn Horcoff netted the shootout winner for the Stars against his former team. Although Kari Lehtonen’s record has improved dramatically thanks to a four-game winning streak, however it has been the Dallas offense that has bailed their netminder out to secure those victories. Lehtonen gave up three goals on Wednesday in Calgary, and also gave up three goals on home ice to the Buffalo Sabres who are the league’s lowest scoring team by far. Don’t trust the Dallas defense or goaltending tonight and certainly don’t trust anything for Edmonton except their offense. Go ahead and take the OVER 5.5 this evening and let’s keep this great run alive.
